Women Leading In Film, Philanthropy and Social Justice

The Annual ‘Spotlight’ Awards Gala

The Spotlight Awards is an initiative of How Women Lead, a Bay Area Women's Philanthropy Network. The Spotlight Awards were created to honor those courageous leaders reshaping the landscape for women and girls. This is an award ceremony and film screening event. Join us on Saturday, January 12th, 2019 in San Francisco, at the Merchants Exchange Club.

We are honoring:

Congresswoman Ilhan Omar - Si Se Puede Award

Aimee Allison - Setting the Scene Pacesetter Award
Norah Shapiro - Changing the Narrative Award

The Spotlight Awards were created to honor those courageous leaders reshaping the landscape for women and girls. We champion safe, engaging, and collaborative environments for women to share ideas, make connections, wrestle with challenges of leadership, and take action on the issues that impact their communities.

The Spotlight Awards 2019 celebrate women leading in propelling women of color into the center of our hearts and minds as new leaders in our democracy. We will celebrate the courage and leadership of Aimee Allison, She The People, and Ilhan Omar, U.S. House of Representatives in Minnesota (5th District). How Women Lead is not only committed to raising and empowering diverse voices but is also committed to true and reflective representation, and we believe that Ilhan Omar’s story is one that inspires us all to not be limited by the outdated conventional beliefs of how much women can achieve for their communities.

We are proud to screen the film Time For Ilhan honoring Rep. Ilhan Omar.

In the “TIME FOR ILHAN” documentary, Omar nudges us to rethink what democracy, representation and an equitable and just society should look like. Omar recounts her experience, “When you’re growing up in an environment where your faith and your race are not topics of conversation, it’s really hard to come to an environment where all of that means something. Being black in the U.S. means something. There’s a history.
